Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia (pronounced /seɪnt ˈluːʃə/) is an island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.

Etymology

The island was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse by the French, who were the island's first European settlers. They signed a treaty with the native Island Caribs in 1660. The island's name appears to have been changed frequently during the colonial period, however, "Saint Lucia" remains the island's official name today.
