Salsa (sauce)

Salsa (/ˈsɑːlsə/; Spanish: [ˈsalsa]) is a variety of sauces used as condiments for tacos and other Mexican and Mexican-American foods, and as dips for tortilla chips. They may be raw or cooked, and are generally served at room temperature.

Etymology

The Spanish word salsa translates to English as "sauce". It is derived from the Latin word "salsus" meaning salted. The term "salsa" to describe a specific variety of Mexican sauces dates to the early 19th century.

Varieties

There are many types of salsa, some of the most common include Salsa roja, a red salsa made with tomatoes; Salsa verde, a green salsa made with tomatillos; and Pico de gallo, also known as salsa fresca, a salsa made with raw tomatoes, lime juice, chilli peppers, onions, cilantro leaves, and other coarsely chopped raw ingredients.

Usage

Salsa is often used as a condiment on Mexican and Mexican-American foods such as Tacos, Enchiladas, and Burritos. It is also commonly used as a dip for Tortilla chips.
