Sandimmune

Sandimmune (pronounced: /ˈsændɪˌmjuːn/), also known as Cyclosporine or Ciclosporin, is a medication used primarily for the prevention of organ rejection in transplant surgery. It is also used in certain treatment regimens for autoimmune diseases and some forms of cancer.

Etymology

The term "Sandimmune" is derived from the pharmaceutical company, Sandoz, that first developed the drug, and "immune", referring to its immunosuppressive properties.

Usage

Sandimmune is used to suppress the body's immune response in order to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ, such as a liver, kidney, or heart. It is also used in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues.

Mechanism of Action

Sandimmune works by inhibiting the activity of T cells, which are a type of white blood cell that play a key role in the body's immune response. By suppressing the activity of these cells, Sandimmune helps to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Sandimmune include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. More serious side effects can include kidney damage, liver damage, and an increased risk of infections due to the suppression of the immune system.

Related Terms
