Sigmund Freud (pronounced: SIG-muhnd FROYD) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.

Etymology

The name "Sigmund" is of German origin and means "victory protection". "Freud" is a German surname derived from the Middle High German word "vriunt", which means "friend".

Biography

Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856, in Freiberg, Moravia, Austrian Empire (now Příbor, Czech Republic). He graduated from the University of Vienna in 1881. Freud began his career as a neurologist, studying brain disorders. His work in this field led him to develop innovative treatments for mental disorders, which he called "psychoanalysis".

Psychoanalysis is a set of theories and therapeutic techniques related to the study of the unconscious mind, which together form a method of treatment for mental-health disorders. Freud's psychoanalytic theory was largely based on interpretative methods, introspection and clinical observations.
