Strabismus Surgery

Strabismus surgery (pronunciation: struh-BIZ-muhs SUR-juh-ree) is a surgical procedure used to correct strabismus, a condition where the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. The term "strabismus" comes from the Greek word "strabismós," which means "to squint."

Overview

Strabismus surgery aims to correct the misalignment of the eyes, which can be caused by issues with the muscles that control eye movement. These muscles, known as the extraocular muscles, can be either too strong or too weak, causing the eyes to turn inwards (esotropia), outwards (exotropia), upwards (hypertropia), or downwards (hypotropia).

Procedure

During strabismus surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye. The surgeon then either strengthens or weakens the relevant extraocular muscles to correct the eye misalignment. This is done by either resecting (shortening) or recessing (loosening) the muscles.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgeries, strabismus surgery carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, and reaction to anesthesia. Specific to strabismus surgery, there is also the risk of overcorrection or undercorrection, which may require additional surgeries.
