Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke rehabilitation (/ˈstroʊk ˌriːəˈbɪlɪˌteɪʃən/), often referred to as post-stroke recovery, is an integral part of the recovery process after a stroke. The etymology of the term "stroke" comes from the Old English "strac", meaning "strike", and the Latin "rehabilitare", meaning "to make fit again".

Definition

Stroke rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary approach to help individuals return to active and independent life after suffering a stroke. It involves a team of health professionals including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and psychologists.

Process

The process of stroke rehabilitation begins soon after the stroke has occurred. It involves a range of therapies designed to help the patient regain lost skills and learn to cope with the new challenges that the stroke may have presented. These therapies may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and cognitive therapy.

Goals

The primary goal of stroke rehabilitation is to help the patient regain as much independence as possible. This may involve relearning skills such as walking, speaking, and taking care of personal needs. It may also involve learning new skills to compensate for abilities that have been permanently lost due to the stroke.
