Sustainable agriculture

Sustainable agriculture (pronunciation: /səˈsteɪnəbəl ˈæɡrɪˌkʌltʃər/) is a form of farming that focuses on producing long-term crops and livestock while having minimal effects on the environment. This type of agriculture tries to find a good balance between the need for food production and the preservation of the ecological system within the environment.

Etymology

The term "sustainable agriculture" was coined during the late 20th century, as part of a growing recognition of the importance of environmentally friendly farming practices. The word "sustainable" comes from the Latin sustinere (to hold up, sustain), and "agriculture" from the Latin agricultura (cultivation of the land).
