Tamil Language

The Tamil language (Tamil: தமிழ், Tamiḻ, [t̪ɐmɨɻ]) is a Dravidian language natively spoken by the Tamil people of India and Sri Lanka. Tamil is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as well as two sovereign nations, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Pronunciation

In International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), Tamil is pronounced as /ˈtæmɪl/. The first syllable is pronounced like "tam" in "tamper", and the second like "il" in "bill".

Etymology

The term 'Tamil' is believed to have originated from 'Tamizh', the native name of the language. The exact etymology of 'Tamizh' is unclear, but it is thought to be derived from 'tam'- meaning 'self' or 'one's own' and '-il' indicating location or belonging.
