A team physician (pronounced: teem fɪˈzɪʃən) is a licensed medical doctor who provides medical care and treatment to athletes or sports teams. The term originates from the combination of the words "team", from the Old English tēam meaning offspring, family, group, and "physician", from the Latin physica meaning natural science.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of a team physician is to provide healthcare services to athletes. This includes preventive care, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries. They also provide counseling and education to athletes on health-related issues.
Qualifications
Team physicians are typically specialists in sports medicine, a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. They must have completed a residency in a related field such as family medicine, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or emergency medicine. They must also have additional training in sports medicine.
