Teriparatide

Teriparatide (pronounced as teh-rih-PAR-uh-tide) is a recombinant DNA derived parathyroid hormone analogue used in the treatment of osteoporosis and other conditions that feature bone fragility.

Etymology

The term "Teriparatide" is derived from the Greek words "teri" meaning "around", "para" meaning "beside", and "tide" referring to the tides or cycles of the hormone in the body.

Usage

Teriparatide is primarily used in the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men at high risk for fracture and for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. It is also used for men and women with osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy.

Mechanism of Action

Teriparatide works by stimulating new bone formation by preferential stimulation of osteoblastic activity over osteoclastic activity. This results in an overall gain in bone mineral density and bone strength, reducing the risk of fractures.
