Terminologia Anatomica

Terminologia Anatomica (TA) is the international standard for anatomical terminology, first published in 1998 and updated in 2011. It is used by anatomists, health professionals, and scientists worldwide to ensure clear communication.

Pronunciation

Terminologia Anatomica is pronounced as /tɛrˌmɪnəˈlɒdʒɪkə ænəˈtɒmɪkə/.

Etymology

The term "Terminologia Anatomica" is derived from Latin. "Terminologia" means terminology, and "Anatomica" refers to anatomy.

History

The Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT), previously the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT), developed the TA. The TA replaced the Nomina Anatomica (NA), which had been in use since 1895.

Structure

The TA organizes anatomical terms into 16 categories, each pertaining to a different system within the body. These categories include the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the digestive system, among others. Each term within the TA is assigned a unique code to facilitate identification and usage.
