Thoracostomy

Thoracostomy (pronounced: tho·ra·cos·to·my, /θɔːrəˈkɒstəmi/) is a medical procedure involving the insertion of a tube into the pleural space for the purpose of draining air, blood, bile, pus, or other fluids.

Etymology

The term "Thoracostomy" is derived from the Greek words "thorax," meaning chest, and "stoma," meaning mouth or opening.

Procedure

A Thoracostomy is typically performed under local anesthesia. The procedure involves making a small incision in the chest wall and then inserting a tube into the pleural cavity. This tube is then connected to a drainage system to allow for the removal of air or fluid.

Indications

A Thoracostomy may be indicated in cases of pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, or empyema. It may also be used as part of the treatment for certain lung diseases or conditions, such as lung abscess or lung cancer.

Complications

Potential complications of a Thoracostomy can include infection, bleeding, damage to the lung or other nearby structures, and reaccumulation of air or fluid in the pleural space.
