Toilet (IPA: /ˈtɔɪ.lɪt/, from French toilette "small cloth, dressing room")

A toilet is a sanitation fixture used primarily for the disposal of human urine and feces. Toilets can be with or without flushing water (flush toilet or dry toilet). They can be set up for a sitting posture or for a squatting posture (squat toilet).

Etymology

The word "toilet" came to be used in English along two different paths. In the 17th century, it first emerged referring to a dressing room. This came from the French toilette, which meant "little cloth," a reference to the piece of cloth on which a lady arranged her hair or makeup. The word later came to be used for the personal grooming process itself, and then for the room in which this takes place. By the 19th century, "toilet" was also being used to refer to the fixtures in such a room, especially the device for carrying away bodily waste.

Types of toilets

  • Flush toilet: A flush toilet is a toilet that disposes of human waste by using water to flush it through a drainpipe to another location.
  • Dry toilet: A dry toilet is a toilet that operates without the use of water. It can be a simple pit latrine or a more sophisticated composting toilet.
  • Squat toilet: A squat toilet is a toilet used by squatting, rather than sitting. These are often used in areas with poor sanitation.

Related terms

  • Bidet: A bidet is a plumbing fixture or type of sink intended for washing the genitalia, perineum, inner buttocks, and anus of the human body.
  • Latrine: A latrine is a toilet or an even simpler facility which is used as a toilet within a sanitation system.
  • Outhouse: An outhouse is a small structure, separate from a main building, which covers a pit latrine or a dry toilet.
