Miliaria

Miliaria (pronunciation: /mɪˈlɪəriə/), also known as sweat rash or prickly heat, is a skin condition that occurs when the sweat ducts become blocked and sweat cannot escape to the surface of the skin to evaporate. This causes inflammation that results in a rash.

Etymology

The term "miliaria" is derived from the Latin word "miliarius", meaning "related to millet". The condition is so named because the small, raised bumps that characterize it resemble millet seeds.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of miliaria is a rash, which can appear anywhere on the body but is most commonly found on the face, neck, under the breasts, and in the groin area. The rash is characterized by small, raised bumps that are either clear or filled with pus. Other symptoms may include itching, prickling, and a stinging sensation.

Causes

Miliaria is caused by blocked sweat ducts, which trap sweat beneath the skin. This can occur as a result of excessive sweating, wearing tight or heavy clothing, or living in a hot, humid environment.

Treatment

Treatment for miliaria typically involves keeping the affected area cool and dry. This can be achieved through the use of air conditioning, fans, and lightweight, breathable clothing. Topical treatments, such as calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream, may also be used to relieve itching and inflammation.
