Umbralisib

Umbralisib (pronounced um-bra-li-sib) is a pharmacological agent used in the treatment of certain types of cancer. It is classified as a PI3K inhibitor, specifically targeting the delta and gamma isoforms of the enzyme phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K).

Etymology

The name "Umbralisib" is derived from the combination of letters and syllables that pharmaceutical companies use to create a unique name. The exact etymology is not known.

Usage

Umbralisib is used in the treatment of lymphoma, specifically marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) and follicular lymphoma (FL) that has relapsed or is refractory after at least one prior systemic therapy. It works by inhibiting the PI3K pathway, which is often overactive in cancer cells, leading to uncontrolled cell growth and survival.
