Underarm (Armpit)

Underarm or Armpit (pronounced: /ˈʌndərˌɑːrm/ or /ˈɑːmpɪt/) is the area on the human body directly under the joint where the arm connects to the shoulder. It also provides the under-side of the arm that is opposite the forearm.

Etymology

The term "underarm" comes from Old English under meaning "beneath" and earm meaning "arm". The term "armpit" is considered a little more informal and is believed to have originated from the Middle English term armpytt, where arm means "arm" and pytt means "pit or hole".

Anatomy

The underarm is characterized by being the location for the axillary lymph nodes, the axilla (the underarm's hollow), and the Axillary artery and Axillary vein that pass through it. It is also home to a large concentration of apocrine sweat glands, which are responsible for the distinctive underarm odor.
