Vaginal fornix

Vaginal fornix (/vəˈdʒaɪnəl ˈfɔːrnɪks/; from Latin fornix, meaning "arch") is a term used in human anatomy. It refers to the anterior (front) and posterior (back) recesses into which the upper vagina is divided. These recesses are caused by the protrusion of the cervix into the vagina. The posterior fornix is deeper than the anterior fornix.

Etymology

The term fornix is derived from Latin, where it means "arch". This is in reference to the arch-like structure that the vaginal fornix forms around the cervix.

Anatomy

The vaginal fornix is divided into the anterior and posterior fornix. The cervix protrudes into the vagina, leading to these recesses. The posterior fornix is deeper and closer to the rectum, while the anterior fornix is closer to the bladder.

Clinical significance

The vaginal fornix is an important anatomical landmark in certain surgical procedures and examinations. For instance, in a hysterectomy, the fornices provide access to the uterus and fallopian tubes. During a Pap smear, a swab is often taken from the posterior fornix. The fornices also allow for the drainage of fluid from the peritoneal cavity.
