Vein Stripping

Vein stripping (pronounced: vayn strip-ing) is a surgical procedure performed to remove varicose veins from the legs or thighs. The procedure is also known as venous stripping or vein removal surgery.

Etymology

The term "vein stripping" is derived from the English words "vein", referring to the blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart, and "stripping", which means to remove or take off.

Procedure

Vein stripping involves making small incisions in the skin near the damaged vein. A thin, flexible instrument is then inserted through the incision and into the vein. The vein is then clamped onto the instrument and pulled out through the incision. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia.
