Vessel of War

A Vessel of War (pronunciation: /ˈvɛsəl ɒv wɔːr/) is a naval ship specifically designed for naval warfare. They are usually built in a completely different way than merchant ships. As well as being armed, they are designed to withstand damage and are usually faster and more maneuverable than merchant ships.

Etymology

The term "Vessel of War" is derived from the Old English "fæt", meaning a container or receptacle, and the Old Norse "vǫr", meaning protection or defense. The term was first used in the 16th century to describe ships built for the purpose of war.
