West Africa (IPA: wɛst ˈæfrɪkə)

West Africa is a region of the African continent located in the westernmost part. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Sahara Desert to the north, the Central Africa region to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south.

Etymology

The term "West Africa" is derived from the geographical location of the region on the western part of the African continent. The term "Africa" itself is of uncertain etymology, but it is generally believed to be derived from the ancient Greek and Roman name for the continent, "Afri", which was used to refer to the inhabitants of the area.
