Wikipedia (/ˌwɪkɪˈpiːdiə/ WIK-ih-PEE-dee-ə) is a multilingual online encyclopedia created and maintained as an open collaboration project by a community of volunteer editors using a wiki-based editing system. It is the largest and most-read reference work in history. It is owned and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates on money it receives from donors.
Etymology
The name "Wikipedia" is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning "quick") and encyclopedia (a type of reference work).
