X-ray Microtomography

X-ray microtomography (pronounced: /ˈmaɪ.kroʊ.təˈmɑː.grə.fi/), also known as micro-CT or μCT, is a non-destructive imaging technique that uses X-rays to create detailed three-dimensional images of a sample's internal structure at a microscopic level.

Etymology

The term "microtomography" is derived from the Greek words "micros" meaning small, "tomos" meaning slice or section, and "graphia" meaning to write or record. The prefix "micro-" indicates that the technique is used to examine small, detailed structures that are not visible to the naked eye.

Technique

In X-ray microtomography, a sample is exposed to a beam of X-rays. The X-rays pass through the sample and are detected on the other side, creating a two-dimensional image. The sample is then rotated and additional images are taken. These images are combined using computer algorithms to create a three-dimensional representation of the sample's internal structure.

This technique is used in a variety of fields, including medicine, material science, geology, and biology. In medicine, for example, it can be used to examine the internal structure of bones or tissues without the need for invasive procedures.

Related Terms

  • Computed Tomography (CT): A similar imaging technique that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike micro-CT, CT scans are typically used to examine larger structures and are commonly used in medical diagnostics.
  • X-ray: A form of electromagnetic radiation used in both CT and micro-CT imaging.
  • Tomography: The process of imaging by sections or sectioning, through the use of any kind of penetrating wave.
