Year (yɪər)

A year is a unit of time, typically used to measure periods or intervals longer than a day and shorter than a decade. It is most commonly understood as the period of time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun.

Etymology

The term "year" comes from the Old English word 'gear', which itself is derived from the Proto-Germanic '*jērą'. This term is believed to be related to the Greek word 'hora', meaning 'season'.
