Yellowfin sole

Yellowfin sole (Limanda aspera) is a species of flatfish from the family Pleuronectidae. It is a demersal fish that lives on bottoms in the northern Pacific Ocean, from northern Japan to the Bering Sea and from the Aleutian Islands to southern California.

Etymology

Description

Yellowfin sole can reach a length of up to 65 cm, but average size is around 30 cm. The body is elongated and flat, with both eyes located on the right side of the body. The color is brownish on the eyed side and white on the blind side. The fins are yellowish, giving the fish its common name.

Habitat and Distribution

Yellowfin sole inhabit sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow waters, usually at depths of 10 to 60 meters. They are found in the northern Pacific Ocean, from northern Japan to the Bering Sea and from the Aleutian Islands to southern California.

Diet

Yellowfin sole feed on small invertebrates, mainly polychaetes, amphipods, and bivalves.
