 Estudio de los cromosomas, que son cadenas largas de ADN y proteínas que contienen la mayor parte de la información genética en una célula. Se analizan en el laboratorio muestras de tejido, sangre o médula ósea para identificar cambios en los cromosomas (rotos, ausentes o sobrantes). Es posible que los cambios en ciertos cromosomas sean un signo de una enfermedad o afección genética, o de algunos tipos de cáncer. La citogenética sirve para ayudar a diagnosticar enfermedades o afecciones, planificar el tratamiento o determinar si el tratamiento es eficaz.
