The term metabolism refers to all the physical and chemical and bioligic processes in the body that use energy, such as:

  • Breathing or Respiration
  • Beating of the heart
  • Circulating blood
  • Controlling body temperature
  • Contracting muscles
  • Digesting food and nutrients
  • Basic functions of each cell in the body

Basal metabolic rate

Basal metabolic rate or BMR, refers to the amount of energy needed for a person to not lose weight or gain weight.

Metabolic disorders

A metabolic disorder or disorder of metabolism occurs when certain hormones or other processes interfere with the normal metabolism of the body. Due to metabolic disorders, you might have too much of some substances or too little of other ones that you need to stay healthy.

One of the most important metabolic disorder is metabolic syndrome, also called prediabetes. If not controlled or reversed, this can lead to type 2 diabetes due to a process called insulin resistance
