Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor (pronunciation: æn ˈɑːrbər) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The city's population was 113,934 as of the 2010 U.S. Census, making it the sixth-largest city in Michigan.

Etymology

The city was named after the spouses of the city's founders and for the stands of Bur Oak trees native to the area. The name "Ann Arbor" was given by the founders John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, who named it after their wives, both named Ann, and the word "Arbor", which means "a leafy, shady recess formed by tree branches, shrubs, etc." in Latin.
