Domestic Terrorism

Domestic Terrorism (pronunciation: /dəˈmɛstɪk tɛrəˈrɪzəm/) is a term used to describe acts of violence, threats of violence, or other harmful acts committed by citizens or permanent residents of a state against their own people or property within that state.

Etymology

The term "Domestic Terrorism" is derived from the Latin word domesticus meaning "belonging to the house" and the Greek word terror meaning "great fear or dread". It was first used in the late 20th century to differentiate between acts of terrorism carried out by foreign entities and those carried out by individuals or groups within a country.

Definition

According to the FBI, Domestic Terrorism is defined as "the unlawful use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual based and operating entirely within the United States or its territories without foreign direction committed against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives."
