Name(s): Hypothyroidism. Also called: underactive thyroid.

Cause(s): use of certain medications, pregnancy, it can be a problem since birth, radiation treatment, hereditary.

What age range does this disease most affect? It can affect people of all ages, genders and ethnicities.

Symptom(s): -gaining weight - dry skin or hair - decrease in sexual desire - loss of memory or forgetfulness - more tired than usual - constipation -depression -enlarged thyroid gland

Diagnosis: A blood test called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test. Also a hands on exam.

Is this disease fatal? If so, how? If your thyroid levels get extremely low it can turn into myxedema in which can become life threathening. But it is a very treatable condition when monitored with medication and follow up appointments.

Medical treatments: medications, usually levothyroxine that will restore adequate hormone levels.

Home remedies/ Alternative medicine: prescription medication is affective for managing hypothyroidism.

Systems and organs the disease affects: The endocrine, cardiovascular, nervous, reproductive, and digestive system can all be affected. Organs would be the thyroid and adrenal glands.

It can affect these systems and organs in many ways by causing alot of different health issues such as; heavy menstrual flow, accelerated brain degeneration, faster heart rate, higher blood pressure. Damages to the thyroid gland an affect your metabolic rate along with weight gain of even lost.
