Mexico City

Mexico City (pronunciation: /ˈmɛksɪkoʊ ˈsɪti/) is the capital city of Mexico, and the most populous city in North America. The city is located in the Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a large valley in the high plateaus in the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 ft).

Etymology

The name Mexico City is derived from the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, which was founded in 1325. The name "Mexico" comes from the Nahuatl word "Mēxihco", which means "In the navel of the moon". The city was known as the "City of Palaces" in the 18th century, due to the number of stately buildings built during the colonial period.
