Outlet (medical term)

Outlet (/ˈaʊtlɛt/), in the context of medicine, refers to the lower part or exit of a particular organ or structure in the body. The term is derived from the Middle English word "utlete", meaning a place where something flows out.

For example, the pelvic outlet is the lower opening of the pelvis, bounded by the pubic arch in front, the ischial tuberosities laterally, and the coccyx behind. Similarly, the cardiac outlet refers to the exit point of the heart, where the aorta and pulmonary artery leave the heart to transport blood to the rest of the body.

Obstetrics

In obstetrics, the term 'outlet' is used to describe the lower part of the birth canal, through which the baby passes during childbirth. The obstetric outlet is bounded by the pubic arch in front, the ischial tuberosities laterally, and the coccyx behind.
