Star aniseed (pronunciation: /stɑːr ˈænɪsiːd/), also known as star anise, is a spice that is widely used in cooking and traditional medicine. It is native to China and Vietnam, and is the fruit of the evergreen tree Illicium verum.
Etymology
The term "star aniseed" comes from the star-shaped pericarps of the fruit, and the fact that the fruit's flavor is similar to that of anise, even though the two plants are not related. The word "aniseed" is derived from the Old French anis, itself derived from the Latin anisum, which is the latinized form of the Greek ánison.
Usage
