Word Processor

A word processor (/wɜːrd ˈprɒsɛsər/) is a software application used for the production (including composition, editing, formatting, and possibly printing) of any sort of printable material.

Etymology

The term "word processor" originated in the early 1960s, where it was used to describe a range of machines from simple typewriters with built-in memory to more complex machines. The term was later applied to computer programs as they began to be used for similar tasks.

Definition

A word processor is a computer application that provides for input, editing, formatting and output of text, often with some additional features. Early word processors were stand-alone devices dedicated to the function, but current word processors are word processor programs running on general purpose computers.

Features

The functions of a word processor program typically center on the manipulation of text. This involves the ability to input, edit, format, view, and output text. Most word processors can also support images and other multimedia.

Input

Input is the method by which the text is entered into the word processor. This is typically done through a keyboard, but can also be done through voice recognition software or other input devices.

Editing

Editing is the process of changing the text that has been input into the word processor. This can involve adding, deleting, or moving text, as well as checking for spelling and grammar errors.

Formatting

Formatting is the process of changing the appearance of the text. This can involve changing the font, size, color, and alignment of the text, as well as adding effects such as bold, italic, or underline.

Output

Output is the final product of the word processor. This can be a printed document, a digital file, or a web page.
