Short definition | HPV test A laboratory test that tests cells for DNA or RNA of certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which are known to cause cervical cancer. These high-risk HPV types can also cause other cancers, including cancer of the anus, vagina, vulva, penis, and oropharynx. An HPV test can be used alone for early detection of cervical cancer (also known as primary HPV testing) or at the same time as a Pap test (known as co-testing).
