Sterile Talc - (pronounced) (STAYR-il. . . POW-der) mist or powder form of the mineral magnesium silicate used to prevent malignant pleural effusions from recurring. Malignant pleural effusion is a condition in which cancer causes an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. When sterile powdered talcum powder is given through a tube inserted into the pleural space, it causes the space to close so that fluid cannot collect there. Sterile talcum powder is a type of sclerosant. Also called Sclerosol Intrapleural Aerosol, Steritalc and Talc
