Treadmill Test

A Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as a Cardiac Stress Test, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the cardiovascular fitness of an individual. Pronounced as "tred-mill test", the term originates from the words "tread", which means to walk or step, and "mill", which refers to a machine or apparatus.

Procedure

The Treadmill Test involves the patient walking on a treadmill while their heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and fatigue levels are monitored. The intensity of the exercise is gradually increased by adjusting the speed and incline of the treadmill. The test is typically conducted under the supervision of a Cardiologist or a trained healthcare professional.

Indications

The Treadmill Test is primarily used to detect Ischemic Heart Disease and to assess the severity of Coronary Artery Disease. It can also be used to determine the patient's exercise tolerance, identify abnormal heart rhythms, and evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac treatments.

Contraindications

The Treadmill Test is contraindicated in patients with unstable angina, severe aortic stenosis, uncontrolled heart failure, recent myocardial infarction, and severe hypertension.

Risks and Complications

While the Treadmill Test is generally safe, it may cause complications such as abnormal heart rhythms, heart attack, or rarely, sudden death. Patients may also experience non-cardiac complications such as fainting, falling, or musculoskeletal injuries.

Interpretation

The results of the Treadmill Test are interpreted based on the patient's symptoms, exercise tolerance, and ECG changes. A positive test indicates the presence of significant coronary artery disease.
