The term "self-care" is derived from the combination of the words "self" and "care". "Self" originates from the Old English word "self", meaning "one's own person", and "care" comes from the Old English word "caru", meaning "sorrow, anxiety, grief".

Definition

Self-care encompasses a wide range of activities and practices that are done by an individual to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health. It is a proactive approach to improving health and quality of life by preventing and managing illness. Self-care can include activities such as exercise, healthy eating, personal hygiene, stress management, and sleep.
