COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States (pronounced as /koʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pænˈdɛmɪk ɪn ðə juːˈnaɪtɪd steɪts/) refers to the ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached the United States in January 2020.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which was identified in late 2019. The term "pandemic" is from the Greek words "pan" meaning "all" and "demos" meaning "people".
