Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule Endoscopy (pronounced: kap-suhl en-dos-kuh-pee) is a non-invasive medical procedure used to examine the gastrointestinal tract. The term originates from the Latin words 'capsula' meaning 'small box' and 'endoscopium' meaning 'to look inside'.

Procedure

During a Capsule Endoscopy, the patient swallows a small, pill-sized video capsule which has its own lens and light source. This capsule travels through the patient's digestive system, capturing images that are transmitted to a wearable recording device. The images are then reviewed by a healthcare professional to diagnose conditions such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Advantages

Capsule Endoscopy is often preferred over traditional endoscopy due to its non-invasive nature. It allows for a comprehensive view of the small intestine, an area that is difficult to reach with traditional endoscopy. The procedure is also more comfortable for the patient as it does not require sedation or hospitalization.

Disadvantages

While Capsule Endoscopy has many advantages, it also has some limitations. The procedure cannot take tissue samples or perform therapeutic interventions like traditional endoscopy. There is also a small risk of the capsule becoming stuck in the digestive tract, particularly in patients with intestinal obstruction or narrowing of the intestine.

  • Colonoscopy: A procedure to examine the colon, often used in conjunction with Capsule Endoscopy.
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy: A procedure to examine the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.
