Carotid sinus massage
Carotid Sinus Massage
Carotid sinus massage (pronunciation: kuh-ROT-id SY-nus MASS-ij) is a medical procedure used primarily in the diagnosis and treatment of certain types of cardiac arrhythmias.
Etymology
The term "carotid" is derived from the Greek word "karōtides" meaning "sleep-inducing", referring to the effect of compressing the carotid arteries. "Sinus" is a Latin term for "pocket" or "curve", and "massage" is derived from the Arabic word "massa" meaning "to touch, feel, or handle".
Procedure
Carotid sinus massage involves the gentle application of pressure to the carotid sinus, a dilated area at the base of the internal carotid artery located at the level of the neck. This procedure is performed by a healthcare professional and is used to slow down the heart rate or to diagnose the cause of fainting (syncope).
