Assessment of kidney function

The Assessment of kidney function (/əˈsɛsmənt ɒv ˈkɪdni fʌŋkʃən/) refers to the evaluation of the health and performance of the kidneys. The kidneys are vital organs that filter waste products from the blood and regulate the body's fluid balance. The term "assessment of kidney function" is derived from the Latin words 'assidere' meaning 'to sit beside' and 'functio' meaning 'performance'.

Tests for kidney function

The assessment of kidney function typically involves a series of tests. These include:

  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): This test measures the amount of urea nitrogen, a waste product, in your blood. An increased BUN level may suggest impaired kidney function.
  • Serum Creatinine: This test measures the level of creatinine, another waste product, in your blood. High levels of creatinine may indicate a problem with kidney function.
  • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): This test estimates how much blood passes through the glomeruli, tiny filters in the kidneys that filter waste from the blood, each minute. A low GFR may suggest kidney disease.
  • Urine Tests: These tests measure various components in the urine, such as protein or red and white blood cells, which can indicate kidney disease.
