Dairy Products

Dairy products or milk products are a type of food produced from or containing the milk of mammals, primarily cows, but also goats, sheep, and camels. Dairy products include food items such as yogurt, cheese, and butter.

Pronunciation

  • UK: /ˈdeɪ.ri ˈprɒd.ʌkts/
  • US: /ˈdɛɹ.i ˈpɹɑː.dʌkts/

Etymology

The term "dairy" comes from Old English dæge, meaning "female servant" or "dairymaid", and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *daigiz, "a female servant, dairy maid". The word "product" comes from the Latin productum, the neuter past participle of producere, "to lead or bring forth".

Types of Dairy Products

  • Milk: The liquid produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is the primary source of nutrition for infant mammals before they are able to digest other types of food.
  • Cheese: A dairy product derived from milk that is produced in a wide range of flavors, textures, and forms by coagulation of the milk protein casein.
  • Yogurt: A food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are known as yogurt cultures.
  • Butter: A dairy product made from the fat and protein components of milk or cream. It is a semi-solid emulsion at room temperature, consisting of approximately 80% milk fat.
  • Ice Cream: A sweetened frozen food typically eaten as a snack or dessert. It may be made from dairy milk or cream and is flavored with a sweetener, either sugar or an alternative, and any spice, such as cocoa or vanilla.

Health Effects

Dairy products are often considered a part of a balanced diet, providing a source of dietary calcium, protein, and vitamins D and B12. However, some people are lactose intolerant and must avoid dairy products or take lactase supplements to consume them without discomfort.
