Eating Disorders

Eating disorders (/ˈiːtɪŋ dɪsˈɔːrdəz/) are a range of psychological conditions that cause unhealthy eating habits to develop. They might start with an obsession with food, body weight, or body shape. In severe cases, eating disorders can cause serious health consequences and may even result in death if not treated.

Etymology

The term "eating disorder" is derived from the English words "eating" and "disorder". The word "eating" comes from the Old English 'etan' meaning to consume food, and "disorder" is derived from the Latin 'dis-' meaning "apart" and 'ordo' meaning "order". Thus, an eating disorder refers to a condition that disrupts normal food consumption.

Types of Eating Disorders

There are several types of eating disorders, including:

  • Anorexia nervosa: People with anorexia nervosa may see themselves as overweight, even when they are dangerously underweight. They typically weigh themselves repeatedly, severely restrict the amount of food they eat, and eat very small quantities of only certain foods.
  • Bulimia nervosa: Bulimia nervosa is characterized by episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food (binge eating) followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as forced vomiting (purging).
  • Binge eating disorder: Individuals with binge eating disorder frequently eat large amounts of food but don't try to prevent weight gain by purging.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): ARFID is a new name for an old disorder. The term was coined to describe individuals who have a lack of interest in food, avoid food with certain sensory characteristics, or have concerns about the consequences of eating.

Related Terms

  • Body dysmorphic disorder: A mental disorder characterized by the obsessive idea that some aspect of one's own body part or appearance is severely flawed and warrants exceptional measures to hide or fix it.
  • Orthorexia: An obsession with eating foods that one considers healthy, a medical condition in which the sufferer systematically avoids specific foods in the belief that they are harmful.
  • Pica: Characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive, such as ice, hair, paper, drywall or paint, metal, stones or soil, glass, feces, and chalk.
