The Elbow Joint (pronunciation: /ˈelbəʊ dʒɔɪnt/) is a complex hinge joint formed between three bones: the humerus, radius, and ulna.
Etymology
The term "elbow" comes from the Old English word "elboga" or "elnboga", meaning "bend of the arm", and from the Germanic root "el-" combined with "bog-", a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to bend".
Anatomy
The Elbow Joint is where the long bone at the top of your arm, known as the Humerus, meets the two bones in your forearm, known as the Radius and Ulna. It is one of the most important joints in the body for performing daily activities.
Humerus
The Humerus is the long bone in the upper arm. It is located between the Shoulder Joint and the Elbow Joint. It connects the scapula and the two bones of the lower arm, the radius and ulna.
Radius
The Radius is one of the two large bones of the forearm, on the thumb side. The end towards the wrist is called the distal end. A disk of connective tissue at the distal end of the radius articulates with the carpal bones of the wrist.
Ulna
The Ulna is the inner bone of the forearm. It runs parallel to the radius. The proximal end of the ulna articulates with the humerus; the distal end articulates with the radius, forming the Elbow Joint.
Function
The main function of the Elbow Joint is to provide the motion of extension and flexion to the arm. It also helps in the rotation of the forearm and wrist.
