The course and duration of the disease are exceedingly variable.The atrophy may remain limited to the part in which it begins. Theface alone has been affected in some members of a family, although inother members the limbs subi?equently suffered. In cases in which * AtropViy began in the back-muscles at forty-four in a case recorded by Musso( Riv. Clin., June, 1887), and twelve years later had involved also the legs. Thepatients mother, two brothers, sister, and. maternal uncle suffered in the same wayat the same age. 526 SPINAL CORD. the wasting spreads, years may iutervene before the extension takesplace. In one case, for instance, the right arm became affected atnineteen, the left at twenty-five, the legs at thirty. The general distribution of the atrophy and projec-tion of the scapulae are seen in Fig. 161.* * The patient was a lad sixteen years of age. The following is an abstract ofthe notes of his case. In his family no history of any similar affection can beascertained. There is conclusive evidence that he had a hard chancre at the ageof three, followed by secondary symptoms. The muscular wasting began graduallyduring childhood j even when very young there was little movement in the face, andthat ceased at the age of six or seven.
