Health care in Canada

Health care in Canada (pronunciation: /ˈhɛlθ keər ɪn kænədə/) is a publicly funded system, where the majority of services are provided by the private sector.

Etymology

The term "Health care" is derived from the Old English words "hǣlth" meaning "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well," and "carian" meaning "to trouble, care for, worry about." The term "Canada" is from the Saint-Lawrence Iroquoian word "Kanata," which means "village" or "settlement."

Overview

Health care in Canada is delivered through a publicly funded health care system, informally called Medicare, which is mostly free at the point of use and has most services provided by private entities. The government assures the quality of care through federal standards. The government does not participate in day-to-day care or collect any information about an individual's health, which remains confidential between a person and their physician.
