Hexaminolevulinate (pronunciation: hex-uh-mee-noh-lev-yoo-lin-ate) is a compound used in the field of medicine, particularly in the diagnosis and management of certain types of cancer.

Etymology

The term "Hexaminolevulinate" is derived from its chemical structure, which includes six amino groups (hexa-), a levulinic acid derivative (-levulinate), and an amine group (-amine).

Usage

Hexaminolevulinate is used as a photosensitizing agent in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is administered intravesically for the detection and management of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. It is also used in cystoscopy to enhance the visualization of lesions.

Mechanism of Action

Hexaminolevulinate is a prodrug that is metabolized into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), a photosensitizer, in cells. When exposed to light of a specific wavelength, PpIX produces reactive oxygen species that can kill cells.
