Hokkien
(Redirected from Hokkien dialect)
Hokkien is a group of Southern Min Chinese dialects spoken throughout Southeastern China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and by other overseas Chinese communities around the world. It is the traditional vernacular of the Hoklo people, one of the major cultural and ethnic groups of Taiwan and Fujian Province in China.
Etymology
The term "Hokkien" is derived from the Fujian province's alternative name, "Hokkien" or "Fukien". The name is used in Southeast Asia and the Philippines to refer to the language and its speakers.
History
Hokkien originated in the southern part of Fujian province and has been influenced by other languages and dialects, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, and the native Taiwanese aboriginal languages. It has a history of over a thousand years, with the earliest written records dating back to the Tang Dynasty.
Dialects
Hokkien dialects are generally classified into three groups: Northern (Quanzhou), Central (Xiamen, Zhangzhou), and Southern (Taiwan). Each dialect group has its unique characteristics but they share a high degree of mutual intelligibility.
Phonology
Hokkien has a complex phonological system with six to seven tones, depending on the dialect. It also has a rich set of consonants and vowels, and uses both voiced and voiceless sounds.
Grammar
Hokkien grammar is largely analytic, with words generally uninflected and word order playing a crucial role in the grammatical structure of sentences.
Vocabulary
The vocabulary of Hokkien is largely based on Old Chinese, but it has also borrowed extensively from other languages, including Middle and Mandarin, as well as from the native languages of the regions where it is spoken.
Writing System
Hokkien is traditionally written using Chinese characters. However, in Taiwan, a Romanized script known as Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ) is also used.
Cultural Significance
Hokkien plays a significant role in the cultures of Taiwan and Fujian, being used in traditional music, opera, and literature. It is also the language of many Chinese communities overseas, particularly in Southeast Asia.
