Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec, and the second-largest city in Canada. Known for its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant nightlife, Montreal is a major center for commerce, finance, industry, technology, culture, world affairs and is the headquarters of the Montreal Exchange.

History

Montreal was originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", and is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The city is on the Island of Montreal, which took its name from the same source as the city. The city's history dates back to 1642 when French colonists from La Rochelle established a fortified village that was named Ville-Marie.

Geography

Montreal is located in the southwest of the province of Quebec. The city covers most of the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence River and Ottawa River. The port of Montreal lies at one end of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which is the river gateway that stretches from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

Culture

Montreal is a center of film and television production. The headquarters of Alliance Films and five studios of the Academy Award-winning documentary producer National Film Board of Canada can be found in the city, as well as the head offices of Telefilm Canada, the national feature-length film and television funding agency. Montreal is also home to many recognized cultural, film and music festivals.

Education

Montreal is a major Canadian center for higher learning, being home to many of Canada's highest-ranking institutions. The city has two English-language universities, McGill University and Concordia University, and two French-language universities, Université de Montréal and Université du Québec à Montréal.

Sports

Montreal is known for its love for sports. The city has a number of professional sports teams, including the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League, the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, and the Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer.
