Protestant

Protestant (pronunciation: /ˈprɒtɪstənt/) is a term used to denote a member of the Christian faith who belongs to any of the churches distinct from the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church. The term originated in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation, a movement against what its followers perceived to be errors in the Roman Catholic Church.

Etymology

The term "Protestant" comes from the Latin protestari, meaning "declare publicly, testify, protest", which refers to the letter of protestation by Lutheran princes against the decision of the Diet of Speyer in 1529, which reaffirmed the edict of the Diet of Worms against the Reformation.
